Balanced Wellbeing Healthcare

I recently left a traditional medical practice to pursue my passion and interest in integrative medicine. I hope you take the time to read a little about this exciting new paradigm for patient care. My goal in choosing to practice under this “new medicine” is to go back to what I think medicine has lost. It is my personal belief that the patient-doctor relationship is the gateway to the healing process for most patients. I want this relationship to guide you toward your own ability to heal. I want to give you the tools to promote healing and then vitality. In life, everyone has a story. Most adults, even the ones who describe themselves as “healthy”, are likely to have some imbalances; these may be nutritional, emotional, structural, functional, or spiritual. If we can continually “re-set” ourselves, open our eyes to those imbalances, and “tune up”, I think we will prevent a lot of chronic disease in the future. The time for “re-setting” is now.

Biochemically we are all unique. There are genetic things we are programmed with, but how these genes are expressed is profoundly influenced by our environment, diet, exposures, emotions, and more. Additionally, how our body handles food, drugs, toxins, and stress is intricately different. The notion that one treatment or one pill fits all is unrealistic and even dangerous.

Overall, my my biggest desire for you is to be empowered about your health. The absence of disease does not reflect health. Health is a constant dynamic process, in need of daily nurturance, and results in vitality. Be as great as you can be!!

Kristy began her career working in the not-for-profit healthcare sector after graduating from Texas A&M University.  However, it was in her role as mom she learned about alternative approaches to healthcare. Her daughter suffered with eczema and fatigue. After multiple tests and medical doctors were unable to find the cause, Kristy pursued other avenues for help. Her daughter recovered through the power nutrition.

A few years later, the physical pain Kristy herself had been feeling for years became much worse and healthcare providers started talking about Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia.  Through Hawthorn University, Kristy studied alternative approaches to FM/CFS. She designed a protocol and experienced a drastic reduction in pain and fatigue. The improvement was so significant, she was able to earn a master’s degree in holistic nutrition, rear her children and work full time even as a single mother.

Kristy’s insatiable desire for knowledge has led her to become certified in Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy, Culinary Genomics, Health Coaching and NutriGenetics.

Ella Soderholm is a Registered Nurse (RN) and a Master Nutrition Therapist (MNT). She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN in 2006.  She worked initially in the hospital setting in the Operating Room. Prevention was always top of mind for her as the most impactful approach, and the importance of this became more evident in the hospital setting, being surrounded constantly by sick people. A year later she transitioned to public health and worked there for the next 7 years, with focus on family planning and STD prevention. After struggling with and overcoming the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease through diet and lifestyle intervention, Ella learned the importance of ‘food as medicine’ and decided to further her education in nutrition. She wanted to work in a field where root cause was the focus, instead of symptom management. She wanted to empower people to take control of their health, by teaching them the connection between what they put in their bodies and their health.

Ella completed her MNT certification through the Nutrition Therapy Institute in Denver, CO in 2015.  She feels passionate about helping others achieve optimal health as a result of her health journey. Ella is also First Line Therapy Certified and believes that 90% of disease management comes from diet and lifestyle changes. She is here to provide patients with the tools needed to take control of chronic health problems and achieve personal health goals.

In her free time, Ella enjoys spending time outside! XC skiing, hiking, swimming, paddle boarding and anything that involves her son and husband. She also loves to cook, and takes pride in feeding her family well.

Rachel C. Fischer, MD, MPH

Rachel C. Fischer, MD, MPH, is a functional medicine physician at Restore Health in Loveland, CO where she offers life-style based care while providing a unique perspective that stems from her medical education and practice, as well as her own health journey as a long-time athlete. Prior to transitioning to functional medicine, Dr. Fischer worked for Kaiser Permanente’s occupational medicine team in Portland, OR where she treated thousands of patients with job-related injury and illness. It quickly became apparent that those patients with underlying chronic disease took remarkably longer to heal and return to regular work duty. She discovered that functional medicine was the more complete path to helping patients heal and began practicing functional medicine in 2014.

In addition to her full-time clinical role, Dr. Fischer is adjunct faculty with the University of Western States Master’s program in Nutrition and Functional Medicine where she teaches epidemiology and immunology.  In her clinical practice, Dr. Fischer’s focus is always “lifestyle first” with emphasis on food as medicine.

Dr. Fischer is a graduate of the University of Utah School of Medicine.  She trained in internal medicine at the UofU and completed a fellowship in occupational environmental medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle.  Dr. Fischer has completed the curriculum required by the Institute of Functional Medicine for certification and is board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.  Prior to medical school, Dr. Fischer spent time serving in Nepal for the US Peace Corp and worked as a health policy analyst for Utah Children, a state-wide advocacy organization in Salt Lake City.

An avid athlete, Dr. Fischer is a self-proclaimed CrossFit addict and especially enjoys time outdoors hiking and camping with her dog or cycling the mountains.
